De Living and Postmemory in Stereoscopic Theater
This is a work in progress with a focus on Ersan Mondtag’s 2019 play De Living, a Belgian theater production about the psychological and phenomenological weight of colonial history. I seek to examine De Living through Marianne Hirsch’s notion of “postmemory” and through the play’s unique stereoscopic form, derived from a visual technique of the binary and originating in the nineteenth century.
