The Global Studies Research Colloquium series explores ongoing research by faculty. In these sessions, we will discuss pre-circulated drafts of manuscripts in preparation for publication. These sessions will begin with very quick remarks by the author, a brief comment and introduction by a GS faculty member, followed by an open discussion of the pre-circulated materials.

A case study based on ethnographic fieldwork, The Polygamy Pipeline investigates how and why polygamy persists in the city of Bamako, Mali. The book uses plural marriage as a lens through which to examine the sweeping transformation of life in African cities, of which Bamako is among the fastest-growing. Chapter 1, "Marriage and the Life Course," sets the stage with an overview of changes currently underway to Bamako's marriage system.
