Our upcoming candidate is a postdoctoral fellow with a doctorate in social epidemiology, a masters in public health and social work. With almost 20 years of experience in the field, including as a clinician for survivors of sexual violence, partner and ally of war-affected communities, and mental health services researcher their work is interdisciplinary and incorporates knowledge from the fields of social epidemiology, child development, aging, and cultural psychiatry.
Research Talk: “Addressing Mental Health Disparities of Refugees Throughout the Lifespan: A CBPR Approach”
The candidate with will present an overview of the refugee life experience and micro to macro issues that contribute to mental health disparities among refugee populations. The candidate will discuss past research with refugee communities, with a focus on mixed methods intervention research with Bhutanese and Somali Bantu refugee families in the Northeast United States. Next, the candidate will present findings from current mixed methods CBPR research with older Bhutanese with a refugee life experience in both the US and Canada and argue for the need to address both past trauma and current resettlement stressors to promote the psychosocial wellbeing of this population. Finally, the candidate will outline future research plans, focusing on the need to develop and implement multilevel interventions to promote refugee mental health that leverage refugee community strengths and resources.
