Abstract: After more than a decade of almost flat growth, U.S. electricity demand is forecasted to increase substantially over the next several decades. It is driven primarily, but not exclusively, by large data and AI centers, raising questions about whether there will be sufficient resources to satisfy electricity demand. Resource adequacy is the component of reliability that probabilistically models whether power systems can serve the demand under a range of system conditions. Additional challenges to resource adequacy include increased use of variable and intermittent renewable resources such as wind and P.V. solar, recent severe weather outages, and an evolving climate. This presentation introduces resource adequacy analysis, discusses its role in reliability analysis, describes emerging technical issues and their potential solutions, and places resource adequacy in the broader context of electricity markets and system planning. Bio: Frank A. Felder, Ph.D. is a Principal at Independent Electricity Consultants, LLC., and a Senior Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. Formerly, he was the Director of the Rutgers Energy Institute, Research Professor, and Center for Energy, Economic and Environmental Policy at the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, Rutgers University. He actively teaches, researches, and consults on electricity markets and the reliability and resiliency of power systems. He holds a doctorate in Technology, Management, and Policy from M.I.T.
