Abstract:  “Managing Customer-Sited Resources at the Grid Edge: Utility Strategies for Management, Coordination & Control of Behind-the-Meter Assets”
The rapid growth of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), Demand Response (DR) programs, and other Behind-the-Meter (BTM) technologies is reshaping how utilities plan and operate the grid. At the same time, aging infrastructure and rising electricity demand are intensifying the challenge of maintaining reliability and resilience. This talk explores how utilities are developing and deploying innovative strategies to control and coordinate grid-edge assets. Key themes include leveraging DERs and DR for load management, power quality support, and grid reliability— while deferring or avoiding costly infrastructure upgrades. This presentation highlights how utilities are adapting to both the technical and business challenges/opportunities of the evolving grid edge.

Bio:  Jasper Chumba is a Power Flow and Data Analytics professional with experience in Utility Distribution Design and Engineering. He has contributed to pioneering projects in DER management and DR orchestration. His expertise includes applying power flow simulation tools to evaluate the impacts of BTM resource integration, developing and validating utility use cases, and using data-driven insights to build business cases for innovative grid-edge applications.

Jasper first engaged with grid-edge technologies during his time in Lehigh University’s Energy Systems Engineering program, where his Capstone project focused on Virtual Power Plants (VPPs). Since graduating, he has worked with three utilities, helping them address the challenges of the modern grid while maximizing the value of customer-sited resources.
