TRACT: Australia is undergoing a significant energy transition\, aiming
to decarbonize its power grid and increase the use of renewable energy sou
rces. This talk spotlights key energy transition trends and observations i
n Australia\, a nation home to some of the largest 100%+ renewables (wind\
, solar\, storage) grid regions in the world. This aggressive strategy is
backed by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) \, which predicts t
hat by 2030 solar and wind capacity in the national grid will triple\, and
rooftop solar capacity will double and storage capacity is also expected
to increase significantly. The Australian Government has committed to a 43
% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 from 2005 levels and aims
for net zero emissions by 2050. \n\nEfforts are being made to integrate re
newable energy into the power system securely and efficiently. This includ
es developing new tools and technologies\, such as advanced modeling progr
ams and monitoring devices\, often with the help of artificial intelligenc
e.\n\n Has this rapid acceleration to net zero created new opportunities?
Can the US draw upon these experiences?\n\n \n\nBio: Leo Figueira (Lehigh
 University\, Business Economics C/O '03) has over 20 years of experience i
n energy and renewables spanning the US\, Europe and Asia Pacific. Over th
e last 16 years\, he has been based in Australia at the forefront of the c
ountry's rapid transition from predominantly coal reliant power generation
to predominantly renewable generation. Leo is Commercial Director for Can
adian Solar in Melbourne and a frequent contributor to regulatory rule cha
nges working alongside regulators as well as other industry advocacy group
 s.
